The father of the 94-year-old lithium battery announced new battery technology: can store 3 times the power, not easy to short circuit

Lithium-ion batteries are now widely used in notebook computers, mobile phones and tablets, and one of the inventors of lithium-ion batteries, 94-year-old John Goodenough, announced a new generation of battery technology. : Energy density is a new solid-state battery with 3 times the current lithium battery and higher safety factor.

According to PC World, an international IT professional magazine, Gudinaf's landmark research was recently published in Energy & Envritionmental Science.
Gudi Naf is a Fermi winner and has made important contributions to materials science and technology, especially in the field of lithium-ion batteries. He is the inventor of lithium cobaltate, lithium manganate and lithium iron phosphate anode materials. He also found that lithium cobalt oxide materials can be used as cathodes for lithium-ion batteries, accelerating the commercialization of lithium-ion batteries and having an important impact on the global economy.

This time, Gudinav worked with Maria Helena Braga to develop a battery that uses solid glass as an electrolyte. It is understood that this battery has many advantages, such as non-flammable, high volume energy density, long cycle life, fast charge and discharge speed, and so on.
Researchers say solid-state batteries can solve many problems, including security. For example, at the end of last year, South Korea's Samsung Group was forced to recall its Samsung Galaxy Note7 mobile phone due to a battery explosion. The investigation revealed that in the Samsung Galaxy Note7 mobile phone battery accident, the battery temperature was overheated due to a short circuit, or the battery exploded. According to the computer world, one of the reasons for battery shorts is that metal whiskers called "dendrites (or branches)" spontaneously form and penetrate the electrolyte barrier that isolates the cathode and anode of the cell.

John Goodinav and Maria Helena Braga claim that solid-state batteries using glass electrolytes can prevent the formation of these metal whiskers that cause short circuits.

According to experiments, the energy density of solid-state batteries is nearly three times that of conventional lithium-ion batteries. This means that, theoretically, in the same volume, a solid-state battery can store three times the amount of electricity equivalent to a lithium-ion battery. At the same time, the researchers also said that solid-state batteries can be charged and discharged for more than 1200 cycles, and can be used normally in an environment of minus 4 degrees Fahrenheit (equivalent to minus 15.6 degrees Celsius).

It is reported that John Goodinav and Maria Helena Braga are currently continuing their solid-state battery research and are also preparing to apply for a patent. They say that solid-state glass electrolytes made from sodium are more environmentally friendly than lithium used in lithium-ion batteries, and they simplify the manufacturing process. So it is planned to work with battery manufacturers in the near future to develop and test new batteries for electric vehicles and energy storage devices.
Some analysts believe that the introduction of solid-state batteries into the market will bring great changes to the electric vehicle industry. Because higher energy density means that the cruising range of an electric car after a single charge will be greatly improved. In addition, the electrolyte in this new solid-state battery is still highly conductive in low-temperature environments, thus ensuring that electric vehicles will still function properly in sub-zero temperatures.
Gudinav told the MIT Technology Review that they are preparing to patent the new solid-state battery and plan to work with battery manufacturers to develop and test new batteries for electric vehicles and energy storage devices.
"The development of the final product will be done in cooperation with the battery manufacturer. I don't want to do product research and development, and I don't want to do business. After all, I am 94 years old, and it is useless for the money." Gudinaf said.
